63 days of heroic struggle
On August 1, 1944, the uprising broke out in Warsaw on the orders of the Polish Home Army Commander General Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski. It was planned for several days, and fell on October 3 after 63 days of heroic struggle.
During the fights in Warsaw, some 18,000 insurgents were killed and 25,000 wounded. Losses among the civilian population were enormous, amounting to about 180,000 dead. The surviving residents of Warsaw, about 500 thousand, were expelled from the city, which was almost completely burned and demolished after the uprising.
