An unusual historical discovery has been made near Iłowo, in the Sochaczew district. Members of the Sochaczew Group of History Explorers found a banner of one of the Polish units fighting in September 1939 Battle of Bzura, hidden in the ground.
The historic object had been hidden in a metal milk can, but the passage of time and corrosion of the container had allowed moisture to enter, causing serious damage to the fabric. Once found, the banner was immediately transferred for urgent restoration work to the Polish Army Museum.
On March 11, 2025, specialists from the Textile Conservation Laboratory of the Polish Army Museum carefully opened the container and took out the flap of fabric hidden inside. It was confirmed to be the banner of the 68th Września Infantry Regiment. The banner was presented to the unit by the President of the Republic of Poland Ignacy Mościcki on May 28, 1928, in Września.
This landmark discovery sheds new light on the fate of the 68th Regiment, which fought heroically in the September campaign, defending the Homeland against German aggression. The regiment originated in Września and became famous for its exceptional dedication and fighting spirit.
