Lilli: artificial intelligence helps seniors

New monitoring technology using artificial intelligence to help elderly people living alone has been introduced in 12 communities in England and Wales.

The system, called “Lilli,” allows remote monitoring of the activities of elderly and vulnerable people in their own homes. Using a set of sensors placed in strategic locations in the home, they monitor movement, use of appliances, bathrooms, etc. The system does not require carrying any devices.

The profile of a person’s regular daily routine created in this way makes it possible to detect deviations from the norm. If alarming changes in behavior (such as prolonged inactivity) are detected, the system sends alerts to caregivers or family, allowing for quick response and assistance.

The main purpose of using the system is to allow the elderly to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and avoid moving them to nursing homes prematurely.

Economists believe that its widespread use could save the health service more than a billion pounds over the next 10 years.
