Moderate consumption of coffee and tea may be an important factor in the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, according to a recent study by researchers from China and Sweden. The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, highlight the potential benefits of these popular beverages for heart health.

The study focused on the role of caffeine contained in coffee and tea. They found that regular, moderate consumption of these beverages is associated with a lower risk of cardiometabolic disease. Specifically, drinking three cups of coffee a day, or consuming 200-300 mg of caffeine a day, can reduce the risk of these conditions by almost half compared to people who consume less than 100 mg of caffeine a day or don’t drink coffee or tea at all.

The analysis was based on data from the UK Biobank, which included more than 500,000 participants aged 37-73. The researchers focused on a group of 300,000 people who had no cardiometabolic diseases at the start of the study. Moderate consumption of coffee and tea was correlated with a lower risk of developing new cardiometabolic disorders. The study also looked at blood biomarkers, which showed associations between caffeine and lower cholesterol levels and improved insulin resistance.

Although the results need further verification, current evidence suggests that moderate caffeine consumption may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, regardless of age, gender, smoking or physical activity.
