Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School – SYMBOL of Modern Education 2024

Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School (SGMK) became a winner of the SYMBOL of Modern Education 2024 award. The Chapter of the 14th edition of the nationwide program conducted in “Business Monitor”, “Rzeczpospolita”, “Market Monitor”, “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” and “Puls Biznesu” awarded the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School the title of Symbol of Modern Education 2024. This is another award for SGMK after the recently received “Polish Innovation Award 2024”.   

“The Symbol of Modern Education 2024 awarded to Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School is an appreciation of the innovative, international and interdisciplinary nature of SGMK’s teaching. The role of the University undertaking such activities, in particular the adaptation of teaching to the challenges of the future and those of current market needs, is absolutely crucial.” – emphasizes Prof. Dr hab. Gertruda Uścińska, Rector of SGMK. – “This is another, after the Polish Innovation Award, recognition for building an international research and academic center focusing on the education of doctoral students, specialists of the highest level, constituting an innovative and very modern model of education and scientific activity.” – she added.  

Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School is a place where tradition meets modernity; interdisciplinarity and international character are the foundations of our activities (the internationalization rate of our staff is about 50%). We are looking to the future by making efforts in realizing the main task of science, which is the search for truth. 

The SYMBOL 2024 award gala was held on November 22, in Katowice, Poland. The award was received on behalf of the SGMK authorities by the Dean of the College of Economics and Management, Dr. Mikołaj Handshke.  

SGMK – High Quality Teaching  
The activity and achievements of the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School have once again been recognized. SGMK is a new public educational institution, established on the 550th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus’ birth, undertaking interdisciplinary scientific activities in the “Copernican areas”: astronomy, medical sciences, economics, law, theology and philosophy. The university is distinguished by its international character and high quality of teaching.   

Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School offers doctoral programs through five colleges: The College of Astronomy and Natural Sciences in Toruń, the College of Medical Sciences in Olsztyn, the College of Legal Sciences in Lublin, the College of Philosophy and Theology in Cracow, and the College of Economic Sciences and Management in Warsaw. 

Lectures and classes have so far been given by more than 120 scientists, lecturers from the world’s leading research centers (M.I.T., Oxford University, Stanford University, Princeton University, Harvard University, La Sapienza), including many Nobel Prize winners: Prof. William E. Moerner (in chemistry), Prof. Joachim Frank (in chemistry), Prof. Didier Queloz (in physics), Prof. Michel Mayor (in physics), Prof. Arthur B. Mc Donald (in physics), Prof. James E.B. Peebles (in physics). The culmination of the academic year on June 28, 2024, was marked by a lecture entitled “The Future of Europe” delivered by Nobel Laureate in Economics, Prof. Paul Krugman. 

SGMK’s young scientists have been recognized for their scientific achievements with prestigious awards, such as the Young Investigators Awards – ESPK, and the START Program of the Foundation for Polish Science.  

SGMK is a place of education unlike any other in Poland. It was born from ideas, discussions, and actions of the international academic community from renowned academic institutions. Thanks to the unique know-how of experts—scientists and practitioners cooperating with the University—we can promote Copernican ideas worldwide, utilizing the latest resources and scientific achievements. 

SYMBOL 2024 – Award for those who change the world for the better   
SYMBOL is a nationwide program aimed at promoting companies and institutions that are unsurpassed role models in their industry – SYMBOLS, focused on the future, progress and innovative solutions.   

During the thirteen editions of the Symbol program, about 800 institutions have been recognized. The winners are entities characterized by̨ innovation̨, transforming their environment with̨ intelligent mechanisms based on knowledge and competence.  

 The 2024 SYMBOL program is under the honorary patronage of the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR), the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP). Patent Office of the Republic of Poland, the General Council of Research Institutes, the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland, the Polish Economic Society, the Upper Silesia and Zagłębie Metropolis, the Union of Polish Counties, the Polish Regions, the Union of Voivodeships of the Republic of Poland.
