Students from Jagiellonian University, Warsaw University and AGH University of Science and Technology have won medals in the 31st edition of an international mathematics competition. Nearly 500 young mathematicians from around the world competed in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
Participants in the IMC (International Mathematics Competition for University Students), which ended on August 11, had to solve 10 tasks in two days. Individual and team prizes were awarded based on the amount of points earned by the contestants.
One of the main prizes (Grand First Prize) was awarded to Łukasz Orski from Jagiellonian University – he was outperformed only by participants from Russia and Germany.
Gold medals went to Korneliusz Obarski, Paweł Pielas, Szymon Śmigielski and Antoni Puch from Warsaw University, Bartlomiej Bychawski and Andrei Karmanovich from Jagiellonian University, and Michał Warmuz and Piotr Łukasiewicz from the AGH University of Science and Technology. The silver medal went to Aliaksiei Mamonau of Jagiellonian University.
In the team competition, Jagiellonian University came in third – after St. Petersburg State University (Russia) and the University of Bonn (Germany). The team from Warsaw University took 7th place.
The competition was hosted by the American University in Blagoevgrad. The IMC has been held since 1994, for the last 14 years exclusively in Bulgaria. In 2002, the competition was held in Warsaw.
