Recruitment for the 48th Polar Expedition to the Hornsund Polish Polar Station in Spitsbergen

The Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IGF PAN) has announced recruitment for the 48th Polar Expedition to the Polish Polar Station Hornsund. Candidates interested in this unique offer can currently send in their resumes. The Institute is looking not only for meteorologists or researchers, but also a doctor, a maintenance worker and an IT specialist. 

Spistsbergen expedition: wintering and summer group 

The announcement, published on the IGF PAN website , lists the following available openings: 

For the wintering group – expedition dates June 2025 – July 2026 : 

  • Meteorologist (3 positions) in particular with experience in the IMGW meteorological service; 
  • Environmental monitoring specialist / oceanographer-hydrologist with a motorboat helmsman’s patent and experience in RIB type boats and pontoons in marine conditions; 
  • Geophysicist-electronic engineer with experience in the fields of electronics and geophysics; 
  • Computer scientist with experience in Linux and Windows system administration, data communications and satellite communications; 
  • Mechanic with skills in operating generators and diesel engines; 
  • Maintenance Worker with experience in general construction work and repair and maintenance of sanitary, electrical and structural systems.

For the summer group – expedition dates April or June 2025 – September or October 2025: 

  • Technical worker (2 positions) with skills in electrical, general works and plumbing. Possession of all types of licenses related to the operation of electrical installations (SEP), mechanical equipment (e.g., HDS cranes, tractors, generators, PTS transporters) and welding licenses will be an asset; 
  • Administrator / Field Assistant with mountain field experience, experience in handling tourist traffic and English language skills; knowledge of basic environmental measurements (e.g.: measuring flow in rivers, sampling for analysis); 
  • Cook and assistant cook with experience in cooking for groups

How to join a polar expedition? 

To become a member of the 48th Polar Expedition of IGF PAN, you need to send an application indicating your chosen position to the email address provided in the announcement. The email should include a CV, a cover letter and a statement that you are not listed in the National Criminal Register. Applications are being accepted until December 18, 2024.
