Sensational discovery in Vilnius Cathedral

An unusual discovery has been made in the vaults of Vilnius Cathedral: archeologists found hidden tomb insignia associated with the rulers of Lithuania and Poland. The secret hiding place contained artifacts belonging to the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander Jagiellon, Elizabeth of Austria – the first wife of Sigismund II Augustus, and his second wife Barbara Radziwiłłówna.

Among the artifacts found are the grave crown of Alexander Jagiellon, the grave crown, chain, medallion, ring and natal plate of Elisabeth of Austria, as well as the grave crown, scepter, royal orb, three rings, chain and two coffin plates of Barbara Radziwiłłówna.

Importantly, these insignia were made specifically for burials and were never used by rulers during their lifetime. As Archbishop Grushas explained, they are unique examples of sepulchral insignia that not only served a symbolic function, but also emphasized the dignity of the deceased.

The secret of the treasure’s concealment

The treasures were hidden in 1939, amid the threat of the outbreak of World War II and the planned closure of the cathedral. Since then, their fate has remained unknown, although numerous attempts have been made to find them. The cache was finally opened on December 16, 2024.  The priceless items were wrapped in pre-war Polish newspapers. The discovery is the result of years of research and exploration, which intensified after Lithuania regained its independence.

What’s next for the insignia?

The artifacts found will undergo careful conservation and restoration. The plan is to exhibit them in museums so that they can become available to the general public. The discovery will not only enrich the knowledge of Lithuanian and Polish history, but will also attract the attention of history buffs and tourists from all over the world.

Significance of the discovery

The discovery in the vaults of Vilnius Cathedral is not only a testimony to the splendor of the Jagiellonian dynasty, but also evidence of the rich traditions and symbolism that accompanied the burials of rulers. The discovery is a reminder of the common history of Poland and Lithuania, as well as of the heritage that unites the two nations.
