Prof. Gertruda Uścińska, acting Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School, took part in the official celebration of the Polish Armed Forces Day. On August 15, ceremonies marking the Polish Armed Forces Day, which commemorates the victorious 1920 Battle of Warsaw, were held across the country.
Prof. Uścińska attended the main official celebration, which took place in Warsaw with the participation of the highest state authorities and the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces. The Field Cathedral of the Polish Army hosted a mass for the Homeland and soldiers on the 104th anniversary of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw. At noon, a ceremonial change of guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier took place at Józef Piłsudski Square.
The culmination of the celebration of the Polish Armed Forces Day was a military parade, during which more than 2,500 soldiers from all types of the Polish Armed Forces and about 80 color guards presented themselves. In addition to Polish soldiers, allied troops – American, British and Romanian soldiers stationed in Orzysz, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, as part of the NATO Battle Group (eFP) – marched on Wisłostrada. Also participating in the parade were representatives of international units stationed in Poland – the NATO Multinational North-East Division from Elblag, the Multinational North-East Corps from Szczecin, the Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian brigade from Lublin, as well as the Eurocorps from Strasbourg, of which Poland currently holds command. The parade of troops was accompanied by the passage of more than 200 military vehicles and a flypast featuring F-16 fighter jets and Apache and Black Hawk helicopters.
August 15 marks the anniversary of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw. The victory of the Polish army was crucial for preserving the country’s independence and stopped the march of the Bolshevik Revolution on Western Europe.
August 15 was proclaimed a Polish Armed Forces Day in 1923 and celebrated until 1947. In 1992, the holiday was restored after decades of Soviet–imposed communism. For the last several years, a military parade has become an integral part of the official national celebration of the Polish Armed Forces Day.
