Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School

SGMK Rector Gertruda Uścińska in an interview with wPolsce24: On the future of social systems, pensions and state responsibility

In an interview with wPolsce24 TV, Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School, Professor Gertruda Uścińska, discussed the key challenges facing social insurance systems and public finances in Poland and Europe. As former president of the Social Insurance Institution, Prof. Uścińska shared her knowledge and analysis of the future of pension and social benefits, emphasizing the need to ensure the stability of these public systems.

The role of the state in social insurance systems
During the interview, Prof. Uścińska pointed out the fundamental role of the state in maintaining and developing the social insurance systems that have been in place in Poland for more than 90 years. As she stressed, these are the state’s obligations to its citizens, which should not be subject to political fluctuations. The rector noted that while the financial situation may require adjustments, it is crucial that public finances and the labor market be managed in such a way as to enable the implementation of support programs.

Prof. Uścińska also referred to the work on the report on the future of the European Union, in which she participated, pointing out that experts across Europe agree that the future belongs to public systems, which must be properly managed to ensure financial security for the future. However, she pointed out that in Poland, 85% of pensioners’ income comes from the state system, which poses a challenge in the face of an aging population.

Appeal to young people for pension awareness
The conversation also revolved around young people and their pension. Prof. Uścińska stressed that it is extremely important for the younger generation to start thinking about the future and retirement early in their careers. As she noted, there is still insufficient awareness in Poland about where pensions come from and the importance of paying contributions in legal work. The rector pointed to educational initiatives, such as the Insurance Knowledge Olympiad, which aim to raise knowledge in this area.

Prof. Uścińska underlines her focus on public service
In closing, Prof. Uścińska stressed that she continues to focus on public service. She is currently heading the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School in Warsaw. Her work for the public good and the education of the younger generation does not cease, which is an important part of her professional career.
