Swedish satellite monitors Baltic Sea

The Swedish government has announced the launch of its first military telecommunications satellite.

The satellite, named GNA-3, will fly over the Baltic Sea region four times a day, transmitting important data from the point of view of state security, Swedish authorities said on Friday. They stressed that more projects are in the pipeline.

The satellite was launched in August 2024 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The operation took place in secret, and its success was confirmed on Friday, January 31, 2025.

Owned by Sweden, the GNA-3 satellite weighs about 4 kg and is currently orbiting at an altitude of 500 km above Earth. The device travels four times a day over the Baltic Sea and collects information important to the country’s security.
