Winners of the 2024 International Economics Olympiad at SGMK

On October 10, 2024, Rector Gertruda Uścińska met with the winners of the 2024 International Economics Olympiad (MOE) at the Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School.

The ceremony began with a welcoming speech by Dr. Nicholas Handshke, Vice Dean of the College of Economic Sciences at Nicolaus Copernicus Superior School. Then SGMK Rector Prof. Gertruda Uścińska expressed her appreciation for the winners, emphasizing the importance of the achievements of young economists.

The attending guests also had the opportunity to listen to a short lecture “Nicolaus Copernicus. Economist.”, delivered by Robert Szaj, President of the Nicolaus Copernicus Foundation, popularizer of science and creator of TVP Nauka.

On the same day, during the meeting at the Copernican Academy, AK Secretary General Prof. Grzegorz Górski presented our young outstanding economists with congratulatory letters and awards.   

The winner of the International Economics Olympiad was Szymon Jackowski from the 14th Stanisław Staszic High School in Warsaw. During the competition, organized on September 1-4 by the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia, Greece, Polish student defeated representatives of 22 countries. 

Nearly 100,000 high school students from four continents took part in the national qualifiers for the Olympiad. The Polish team, consisting of five winners of the XXXVII Olympiad of Economic Knowledge, won a total of five medals: two gold and three silver.  

The gold medals were won by:  

  • Szymon Jackowski, 14th Stanisław Staszic High School, Warsaw  
  • Jan Baranowski, Public High School of the University of Łódź, Łódź 

Silver medals were won by:  

  • Patrycja Smentoch, Maciej Plażyński Academy of Good Education, Gdańsk 
  • Wiktor Kocur, St. Mary Magdalene High School, Poznań  
  • Szymon Sobiech, Stanisław Staszic High School, Lublin 

The Polish team also won first place in the team classification. 

The International Economics Olympiad is an annual competition that stimulates young people to be active in the fields of economics, business and finance through creative problem solving. The Polish team supervisors were Prof. Bogdan Ślusarz (University of Zielona Góra) and Dr. Radoslaw Ślusarczyk (Cracow University of Economics). Among the jury members was Prof. Łukasz Hardt, vice president of the Polish Economic Society.  

The Olympiad of Economic Knowledge, based on results from which the Polish representation is selected, is co-financed by the Ministry of National Education.   

The International Economics Olympiad, organized for high school students, promotes youth activity in the fields of economics, business and finance.
